itunes.
We all know itunes, almost anyone who has ever been online has heard about it. Almost anyone who owns an ipod probably downloads music from this site. Its a cool place. Price of songs are about 1$.
Napster
Napster the original giver of free music was reigned inn by the RIAA. They now sell music on the website. Their sales model is quite different itunes. While itunes gives you access to one song at a time, these guys have decided to give you access to thousands of songs for a monthly rental. For detailed rental plans check their web site. These guys have an innovative system t keep you coming back. For example, If u take the subscription for a month and download 200 songs. And decide you dont want the service the next month the songs stop working.
Allofmp3.com
Now this is my favorite place. I love these guys they kept the individualcosts of a song low and album cost lower. Compared to itunes this is a steal. They sell music by the Gb. About 30$ a gb. It's a steal anywhere.
Aolmusic
How do they work? Well it's simple. You just pay them $ 9.99, they give you access to about 2 million songs. You stop paying them and the song stops playing. Simple...

The options in this universe of file sharing are endless. The number of songs are limitless, because it depends on the people and what they upload. You dont pay any thing. There is no charge per song. No one pays anything to anyone.
eMule, LMule, MLDonkey, Shareaza, xMule, iMesh, Grokster, iMesh (and its variants stripped of adware including iMesh Light), Kazaa (and its variants stripped of adware such as Kazaa Lite), KCeasy, Mammoth, MLDonkey, mlMac, Poisoned, limewire to name a few. I would suggest limewire easy to use and a fairly large number of people using it.
BitTorrents.
The torrents use a different system to distribute a lot of music and movies. Its complicated. Lets say it takes a huge file breaks it up into little pieces and downloads it from different people. In order to get started with this type of download you would need a to get a bittorent client. I suggest azueres.
And also visit piratebay for the list of things to download.
Usenet
Usenet is one of the oldest computer network communications systems still in widespread use. Its in existence since 1979. So its not very user friendly. But since its been on since years. Its got tons of music and movies.
